Social Distancing Mats / Dots: Why is Social Distancing the Best Strategy to Stop the Spread of COVID-19?
Social distancing mats / dots and directional mats help stop the spread of Covid-19
“Implementing strong social distancing measures is the only way to stop the virus (Covid-19) from spreading” Prof. Gerardo Chowell
COVID-19 is proving difficult to combat with cases slowing in one area while accelerating in another and uncertainty grows now that communities are beginning to reopen and the stay-at-home orders are being lifted. Researchers say that SARS_CoV-2’s rapid spread is likely due to the movements of people with no or very mild symptoms– namely, those who are unaware that they even have the virus. It is this frightening ability for one unaware of any danger to become a link in the chain of contagion that makes social distancing such an important containment measure.
Without an approved vaccine, there is the high probability that the COVID-19 cases will increase and potentially spike again. Lockdown is not a stable solution and it is necessary on many fronts to reopen communities. Social distancing will be a key solution to help us reopen our communities, our schools, our athletic programs and our workplaces while still avoiding / minimizing the continued spread.
While social distancing may feel like an inconvenience, it is the best way right now to protect our family, friends, coworkers and neighbors who may be vulnerable. Washing your hands on a regular basis (especially when you have been in a public place) as well as wearing a face mask in public are necessary activities but the most important effort is to continue to Social Distance by keeping at least 6 feet of distance from others.
As social distancing is a new behavior for many of us, we all need to work together to both slow and prevent the spread of the virus to save lives. Visual reminders serve as a gentle but consistent reminder to keep your distance and help build awareness of this important habit.
